Community Guidelines

Our Rules

Effective September 6, 2026

Goodbye App is where people write to the ones they love and set those words to arrive later, sometimes after they have died. Much of what is written here is written by people who are ill, and much of what is read here is read by people who are grieving. These guidelines say what may be posted and what may not.

We do not screen anything before it is posted. No automated system reads what you write, and nobody looks through the accounts of people nobody has reported. A report is how something wrong reaches us, and a person reads every report. That is why these rules turn on what is posted rather than on why someone posted it: we can act on what a report puts in front of us, and we cannot act on what we cannot see.

Respect Others: Treat other people with care. Harassment, bullying, discrimination, and hate speech aimed at someone are not permitted here. Writing about what was done or said to you is a different thing, and it is allowed.

Say What Is True For You: Fear, anger, grief, pain, and plain accounts of illness and dying belong here. Nothing in these guidelines asks you to be cheerful, and nothing here treats sorrow as something to be moderated away.

Continuous Improvement: We welcome feedback and suggestions for improving the Goodbye App community. Share your ideas with us to help make our platform better for everyone. Feature Request.

Copyright and Trademark: You are not allowed to infringe upon the intellectual property rights of others, including copyright and trademark violations. Please familiarize yourself with our trademark policy and copyright policy to understand the guidelines and rules regarding these matters.

Different Lives: The people here come from different countries, faiths and families, and some from none of those. What is ordinary in one person's illness, dying or mourning is strange in another's. You do not have to understand how someone else is doing this. Do not tell them they are doing it wrong.

Creativity Encouraged: Art, music, writing, and other forms of expression are welcome here.

Read Before You Reply: Read what a person wrote before you answer it. Some of it took a long time to write, and some of it was hard to write at all. A short reply that shows you read it is worth more than a long one that does not.

No Spam or Self-Promotion: Avoid spamming the platform with irrelevant content or excessive self-promotion. Respect the community by sharing meaningful and relevant content.

Protect Privacy: Respect the privacy of others. Do not share personal information or sensitive data without consent.

Stay Safe: Be cautious when interacting with others online. Do not share personal information or engage in risky behavior.

Obey the Law: Follow all local, national, and international laws and regulations. Do not engage in illegal activities or promote harmful behavior.

Support Each Other: Much of what is written here is written in the middle of illness, dying and grief. If you read something like that, you are not being asked to fix it, and most of it cannot be fixed. Saying that you read it is worth more than advice nobody asked for. Some of what people write about here will not come right in the end, and staying with them through it is still worth doing.

Be Responsible: Take responsibility for your actions and their impact on the community. Help maintain a positive and welcoming environment for all users.

Sensitive Content: You are prohibited from sharing media that contains excessive gore, violent scenes, or adult content in video, profile images, or images. Additionally, media depicting sexual violence or assault is strictly prohibited. Learn more.

Child Sexual Exploitation: We have zero tolerance for child sexual exploitation on Goodbye App . Learn more.

Report Violations: If you encounter any violations of these guidelines or witness inappropriate behavior, report it to Goodbye App immediately, and a person will read it.

Illegal Goods or Services: Goodbye App users are prohibited from using our platform for any illegal activities or purposes. This encompasses engaging in the sale, purchase, or facilitation of transactions involving illegal goods or services. Additionally, certain regulated goods or services are also restricted from being traded or promoted through our service. Learn more.

Violent Speech: It is prohibited to engage in speech that includes threats, incitement, glorification, or expressions of desire for violence or harm. You may not threaten terrorism and/or violent extremism, nor promote violent and hateful entities. Your own account of violence done to you is a different thing, and it is allowed: what was done, who did it, and what you felt about them, including the wish that they had been hurt as you were. What is forbidden is turning it on somebody now, a threat made to a person or a post telling other people to go and harm one. What decides it is the post itself, who it is addressed to and what it asks anyone to do. Learn more.

Private Information: You are not allowed to publish or share private information belonging to others, such as home phone numbers, addresses, physical location information, identity documents, financial account information, biometric data or another person's medical records, without their explicit consent. This includes threatening to disclose private information or encouraging others to do so. What this forbids is putting another person's documents and account details where strangers can read them. Writing to your family about an illness in the family, your own or theirs, is not that, and it is allowed. Learn more.

Abuse/Harassment: Sharing abusive content, participating in targeted harassment against individuals, or encouraging others to do so is prohibited. Learn more.

Civic integrity: You may not use Goodbye App to interfere with elections or other civic processes. This includes posting or sharing content that misleads people about when, where or how to take part, or that tells them they may not take part when they may. What decides it is what the post says. Learn more.

Misleading and Deceptive Identities: You may not hold yourself out as another person, group or organization on Goodbye App , and you may not open an account in somebody else's name. What decides it is what the account says it is, which a person reading a report can see. You do not have to use your real name here, and writing under a name that is not your own is not impersonation on its own. Learn more.

Follow Terms of Service: Adhere to Goodbye App Terms of Service at all times. Violation of the Terms of Service may result in account suspension or termination.

Offensive Behavior: It is prohibited to target individuals based on their race, ethnicity, national origin, caste, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, religious beliefs, age, disability, or health condition. Learn more.

Perpetrators of Violent Attacks: Accounts belonging to people involved in terrorist acts, violent extremism or mass violent attacks are removed, and so are posts that circulate what a perpetrator wrote or recorded. Learn more.

Suicide and Self-Harm: Encouraging or urging anyone towards suicide or self-harm is prohibited, and so is setting out methods or instructions for either. Writing about your own experience is not that, and it is allowed: what you have lived through, what you are living through now, your own thoughts of suicide, and what has helped. You do not have to leave any of that out of what you write here. Leave out the methods, because somebody else will read it. Learn more.

Account Compromise: You are prohibited from using or trying to use credentials, passwords, tokens, keys, cookies, or any other data to access, manipulate, or modify the private information or account features of any Goodbye App account that does not belong to you. There is no way to grant another person or another application access to your account, so there is no authorized version of this.

Platform Manipulation and Spam: It is forbidden to artificially boost or diminish the visibility of information on Goodbye App , or to disturb other people's use of it. This includes creating multiple accounts to promote or suppress content, running automated activity to manipulate engagement metrics, and using deceptive methods to mislead or exploit other users. Accounts that do this are restricted or closed. Learn more.

Respect Boundaries: Respect personal boundaries and consent. Ask before you pass on something another person wrote or sent you. Some of what is written here was written for one reader.

Falsified and Altered Content: Users are prohibited from sharing misleading or altered media that could result in harm. Learn more.

Appealing Removed Content or Account: Depending on the type of infringement, users might be able to appeal the decision and possibly get reinstated the removed content or account. Learn more.

By using Goodbye App , you agree to these guidelines and our Terms of Service. Breaking them may result in deleted content, disabled accounts, or other restrictions. There is no public interest exception to these guidelines. Content that breaks them is removed when it is reported, whatever it was posted for.

Share only photos and videos that you’ve taken or have the right to share. Remember to post authentic content, and don’t post anything you’ve copied or collected from the Internet that you don’t have the right to post. Learn more about intellectual property rights. Post photos and videos that are appropriate for a diverse audience. We know that there are times when people might want to share nude images that are artistic or creative in nature, but for a variety of reasons, we don’t allow nudity on Goodbye App . This includes photos, videos, and some digitally-created content that show sexual intercourse, genitals, and close-ups of fully-nude buttocks. It also includes some photos of female nipples. There is no exception for artistic nudity, including photographs of paintings and sculptures. We do not screen images before they are posted, so an exception that turned on why a picture was shared is one we could not apply evenly.

These pictures are allowed: breastfeeding, birth giving and after-birth moments, and health-related pictures of your own body, among them a photograph taken after a mastectomy, photographs to do with breast cancer, and photographs after gender confirmation surgery. Pictures taken as an act of protest are allowed too. If you are wondering whether you may send your family a photograph of yourself after surgery, this is the paragraph that answers it, and the answer is yes. These allowances turn on what the picture shows, which a person reading a report can see for themselves, so none of them asks you for a reason. Every one of them is about an adult’s own body, and none of them extends to a child’s: the paragraph below admits no exception at all.

Do not post an image or video of a nude or partially nude child. There is no context, artistic, journalistic, scientific, educational, documentary or family, in which such an image is permitted here. There is no exception for one shared with good intentions, and none where an allowance above would otherwise cover the adult in the same picture. Content that promotes, depicts, or glorifies violence, abuse, exploitation, or any form of harm to a minor is prohibited on the same terms. When it is reported to us we remove it and we close the account that posted it. Learn more.

Help us stay spam-free by not artificially collecting likes, followers, posting repetitive comments or content, or repeatedly contacting people for commercial purposes without their consent. Don’t offer money or giveaways of money in exchange for likes, followers, comments or other engagement. Don’t post content that engages in, encourages, facilitates, or admits to the offering, solicitation or trade of fake and misleading user reviews or ratings.

You don’t have to use your real name on Goodbye App , but we do require Goodbye App users to provide us with accurate and up to date information. Don't impersonate others. If your account is closed under these guidelines, do not open another one. Follow the law.

Goodbye App is not a place to support or praise terrorism, organized crime, or hate groups. Offering sexual services, buying or selling firearms, alcohol, and tobacco products between private individuals, and buying or selling non-medical or pharmaceutical drugs are also not allowed. We remove content that trades, coordinates the trade of, donates, gifts, asks for, or promotes the use of non-medical drugs. Writing about your own use, including addiction and recovery, is not that, and it is allowed.

Goodbye App prohibits the sale of live animals between private individuals, though brick-and-mortar stores may offer these sales. No one may coordinate poaching or selling of endangered species or their parts. Remember to always follow the law when offering to sell or buy other regulated goods.

We remove credible threats, hate speech aimed at a person, content that targets private individuals to degrade or shame them, personal information meant to blackmail or harass someone, and repeated unwanted messages. Criticism of people who hold public office, or who have a large public audience through their profession or chosen activities, is allowed, and it is not harassment on its own. It is never permitted to encourage violence, or to attack anyone based on their race, ethnicity, national origin, sex, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, religious affiliation, disabilities, or diseases. That rule is about words aimed at a person or at a group of people. Quoting what was said to you is a different thing, and it is allowed. In your own account of what happened to you, you may set the words down as they were said: the slur a parent used, what was shouted during an assault, what was said to you on the ward. What you wrote will not be removed for containing them, and you do not have to sand your own story down to be allowed to tell it here. What is forbidden is turning those words on somebody, or on a group of people. So is a post whose substance is the slurs themselves: if you take the account away and what is left is the words repeated, that is not quoting, and it is read as what it is. All of those are things a person reading a report can see for themselves. Serious threats of harm to public and personal safety are not allowed. This includes specific threats of physical harm as well as threats of theft, vandalism, and other financial harm. A person reads every report of a threat.

Do not glorify self-injury. People write here about eating disorders, cutting and other kinds of self-injury, often because they have lived through them, and that writing is allowed. Encouraging or urging anyone towards self-injury is not. We remove it when it is reported to us, and we may close the account that posted it. We also remove content that attacks or mocks a named victim or survivor of self-injury.

Do not post images or video of graphic violence. That rule is about what the picture shows, and it holds whatever it was posted for. Writing about violence is a different thing and it is allowed: an account of a war you lived through, an injury, an assault, a death you witnessed, or the illness that is taking you, belongs here and will not be removed for being hard to read. If what you have written is hard to read, say so at the top, so that whoever opens it can choose when to.

That rule is about violence, and it is not aimed at your own body. Photographs of your own body, your own illness, your own treatment and your own dying are permitted here. A surgical scar, a hospital bed, a drain or a line, a wound that is healing, the last photograph anyone takes of you: none of that is graphic content under these guidelines. You do not need a warning on it, you do not need a reason for it, and you do not need our permission to show the people you are writing to what is happening to you. Nudity is dealt with separately above, and the health situations named there are permitted as well. Learn more.

Help us keep the community strong: Each of us is an important part of the Goodbye App community. We do not screen what people post before it goes up, so a report is how something wrong reaches us. If you see something that you think may violate our guidelines, please help us by using our built-in reporting option. Every report reaches a person, and we review reports within 24 hours of receiving them. If the content breaks these guidelines we remove it, and we may restrict or close the account that posted it. When you complete the report, try to provide as much information as possible, such as links, usernames, and descriptions of the content, so we can find and review it quickly. We may remove entire posts if either the imagery or associated captions violate our guidelines.

Do not post video that carries advertising inside it, such as a pre-roll advertisement or a sponsor's graphic. No advertising is shown on this service, and a video is not the way to put some here. Nothing is screened before it goes up, so there is nobody to ask beforehand and no permission that can be given. When it is reported to us we remove it.

You may find content you don’t like, but doesn’t violate the Community Guidelines. If that happens, you can unfollow the person who posted it. If there's something you don't like in a comment on one of your posts, you can delete that comment. Many disputes and misunderstandings can be resolved directly between members of the community. If one of your photos or videos was posted by someone else, you could try commenting on the post and asking the person to take it down. If that doesn’t work, you can file a copyright report.

If you believe someone is violating your trademark, you can file a trademark report. Don't target the person who posted it by posting screenshots and drawing attention to the situation because that may be classified as harassment. We may work with law enforcement, including when we believe that there’s risk of physical harm or threat to public safety.

If you are not sure whether something belongs here, the question to ask is what it will be like for the person who opens it. If you see something that breaks these guidelines, report it, and a person will read it.
