Everything a writer needs about Goodbye App in one place: the boilerplate, what the product actually does, the facts, the logo files, and where to reach us.

Boilerplate

Copy either version as it stands. Both are cleared for use. The short one leaves out the inactivity setting, so use the full paragraph anywhere that detail matters.

Full paragraph

Goodbye App is a free service for writing goodbye letters and scheduling messages for the people you love. You write a letter, a post or a voice recording, choose who receives it, and pick the day it arrives, anywhere from tomorrow to thirty years from now. It stays in your own account until it goes out. You can also set an inactivity threshold, so that if you stop using the account for a period you choose, everything you have scheduled is released early. Goodbye App runs in any web browser and on Android, in fifteen languages, and an iPhone app is being built. It was founded by Calvin James Heath.

One sentence

Goodbye App is a free service, in fifteen languages, for writing goodbye letters and scheduling messages to be delivered to the people you choose on a day you choose, up to thirty years ahead.

What it does

Somebody writes a letter to the people they love, using a guided form: a goodbye message, end-of-life wishes, funeral arrangements, key contacts, pets, assets and heirlooms, and a Device Passwords section for the practical details a family is otherwise left guessing about. They can record their voice as well, in their own words. They name the people it should reach and the date it should reach them. On that day the letter is delivered by email to the recipients they named, and it appears inside the app for the ones who use it. If the writer has switched on the inactivity setting and the account then goes quiet for the period they chose, it goes out earlier than the date they picked. The same scheduling works for ordinary posts, so a birthday message can be written tonight and arrive on a birthday years from now.

What it is not

Three things get assumed about a product in this category. None of them is true here, and we would rather say so before it reaches print.

  • There are no video letters. A letter is written words and, if the writer wants one, a voice recording.
  • It cannot cue or play anything at a ceremony. Goodbye App delivers to a person, in their inbox, on a date. It has no part in a funeral or memorial service and no way to trigger anything in a room.
  • It is not a password manager, and it holds no documents. The letter does include a Device Passwords section, but that is text the writer types into their own letter for the people who will need it, not a vault, and not something any app or service can be logged into from. There is nowhere to upload a will, a deed or a certificate either: the letter has a place to write down where those papers are, not a place to put the papers. Photographs, video and voice recordings attached to a post or a letter are the one thing that is stored as a file.

Before the delivery date
Nothing is sent. A scheduled letter or post stays in the account that wrote it, unsent, until its date arrives, or until the inactivity setting releases it early.
The inactivity setting
Called the Inactivity Threshold in Settings. A writer can set it to between 3 and 45 days. If the account is not used for that long, everything scheduled on it, letters and posts alike, is released early, whatever date was chosen for it. Using the account resets the clock. It is off unless the writer switches it on, it can be switched off again, and a letter released this way says so and gives the date it was originally meant for.

Using the name and the mark

The product is Goodbye App®, two words, a capital G and a capital A, and it stays in English in every language. The slogan is Every person has a legacy®.

Please do not stretch, recolour, rotate or crop the logo, do not set it on a busy background or a colour that leaves it hard to read, do not add a word to it or build it into another logo, and do not use it in a way that suggests Goodbye App endorses, sponsors or is part of something it is not.

That paragraph is the whole of the rules. If you need something it does not cover, ask at the address below and we will answer in writing.
